Brooks Wallace Award semifinalists selected
Five of 10 candidates represent Southeastern Conference

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Southeastern Conference is generally considered one of the most dominant conferences in the country, and the semifinalist list for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award bears that out.

The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock.

The semifinalist list features five players from the SEC -- Mikey White of Alabama, Richie Martin of Florida, Alex Bregman of LSU, Blake Allemand of Texas A&M and Dansby Swanson of Vanderbilt.

"Again this season the SEC fielded some of the best teams in the country, and these young men are some of the best players in the country," said Tyler Young, Wallace Award co-chair. "Each of these players would be a deserving recipient of the Wallace Award. It will be interesting to see how the final decision works out."

Bregman, a junior at LSU, won the Wallace Award in 2013 as a freshman. He has a .329 batting average with 22 doubles, three triple and nine home runs. He also has 47 RBIs to go with a .978 fielding percentage.

The highest fielding percentage among the semifinalists belongs to Lipscomb's Grant Massey. The senior has a .982 fielding percentage to go along with his .351 batting average, 12 doubles, one triple and two home runs.

Arizona's Kevin Newman is hitting .370 with 19 doubles, one triple and two homers. He has 36 RBIs and a .958 fielding percentage.

"Each player on the semifinalist list has put up great numbers so far this season," said Larry Wallace, Wallace Award co-chair. "They are going to make our committee's final decisions very difficult."
